The Recess Show Celebrates OLM Talent

By: Selma Sabra (Class of 18')

For the first time in OLM history, a space has been opened for students to share their artistic talents. On Friday, March 2nd, the Recess Show featured freshman Natália Guedes, sophomore Marina Koria, senior Isabella Pina, and middle school guests Victor Carvalho and Ana Beatriz Duarte showcasing their talents to a packed auditorium.

These first presentations left little doubt about the many talents OLM students have, ranging from poetry reading to musical performances. The inaugural show also included an exclusive teaser of the school's grand musical, Shrek, which was a must-see for all students and staff. In this comedy-filled story where an ogre falls in love with a princess, the true meaning of friendship is explored, as is the concept of never judging others by their appearances. The musical was held at the school in the end of May, and this first glimpse gave students a taste of what to expect.

Students also had the chance of hearing an award-winning poem written by sophomore Sofia Guedes. entitled “The Dreary Marathon”, the piece conveys, according to its author, “how beautiful life may be if you fully appreciate it, and how sinister and monotone it can get otherwise.” Teen Ink, which is the website in which Sofia published her poem, posted it on the first page of their free verse sections, as it was one of the most voted poems in an online competition.

While we revel in these last amazing performances, students should plan ahead, rehearse their unique talents and sign up for the upcoming editions of this celebration of OLM talent!
